SUMMARY
“The Cask of Amontillado” is a short story about Fortunado and Montresor.
After Fortunado insulted Montresor, Montresor plotted his revenge. It was mardigras night when Montresor tricked Fortunado
into thinking he had Amontillado in his vault. Fortunado was already very drunk and couldn’t resist the offer
for this great wine. So he came with Montresor as he had planned. They walked down the endless hallways while
Fortunado was still drinking other alcoholic beverages. Then finally Montresor trapped Fortunado in a cellar and chained
him to a wall. After he was chained to the wall, Montresor started to wall him in, but before he put the last stone
in place he threw in his torch next to Fortunado leaving him to die.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
The author of the story “The Cask of Amontillado” was written by Edgar Allen
Poe. He was born in Boston on January 19, 1809 and died in 1849. Poe’s childhood was very sad. His
father had left his family, and Poe’s mother died of tuberculosis before he had even turned three. So Poe grew
up with foster parents. He went to the University of Virginia , until he dropped out because of gambling debts.
His father wouldn’t help him out with money so Poe was left broke. Later on in his life he fell in love with his
13 year old cousin and married her in 1937. In 1946 Poe published the story “The Cask of Amontillado”. Many
people think that the story could have been his way of getting back at his foster father. Like Fortunado, his foster father
was a businessman and a Mason, and like Montresor, Poe was Scottish. In February 1847, Poe's young wife died of tuberculosis.
After his wife died Poe was a mess. On October 3 1949, Poe was found in a tavern, delirious and ended up dying four
days later.
