In this story, Poe uses many literary devices to get across the emotion and direction of the story.

Poe demonstrates how powerful imagery can be throughout the story.  He uses vivid descriptions to set the mood.  "The drops of moisture trickle among the bones."  This is one of the lines from the story that was used to describe the catacombs.  Imagery such as this passage generally give the story a very morbid feeling.

Poe also uses irony in his story.  I believe the use of irony gives the story a more twisted feel which is what I believe Poe was aiming for.
"I drink," he said,"to the buried that repose around us."
"And I to your long life."
This passage demonstrates irony because the character that drinks to the other fellow's long life is actually plotting his death at that very moment.
